Introducing the 2015 Berrigan Syrah from the coastal, cool climate wine regions of Robe & Mt Benson in South Australia.
This Syrah is a great example of the unique wines being grown in Mt Benson & Robe and it’s quite unlike any other Syrah (Shiraz) in Australia. It’s the grape variety that continues to surprise seasoned Shiraz lovers, yet being from the same grape variety as those wines grown in more beaten paths, this Syrah really shows how these wines look when grown in cooler climates and limestone soils. Flavours of violet, clove, and cracked pepper dominate, while fresh dark red fruits such as cherries and plums shimmer alongside the French oak from which the wine was matured for 14 months.
“With plenty of natural acidity, colour, and tannins, I am able to guide this wine thru from harvest to bottle with little intervention while encouraging the fruit and spice flavours to hold up and shine in this wine.” Dan Berrigan
3 days of pre-ferment cold soak then 14 days of warm fermentation and malolactic fermentation was completed on this wine, followed by 14 months maturation in fine-grain French oak barriques. The oak really helps to mature and round out this wine and gives the mid-palate extra creaminess and weight which helps push the flavours forward on this wine, and makes the wine easy to pair with a wide variety of food and situations.
